then i realize that i have to understand a bit of hangul at least. FYI, hangul is korean alphabet which i think hangul's so damn CUTE hauahahahah

The Way to Live Forever

Ways to Live Forever is the diary/scrapbook Sam compiles during the last two months of his life. Reading it is less like reading a novel than watching an exceptionally brilliant TV documentary. The text is punctuated by ephemera: drawings, tickets, and especially lists. Lists not only of those eternally unanswerable questions, but also of facts. Sam likes facts. He believes, touchingly, that they are the opposite of questions.

A different kind of list gives the book its structure. "List No. 3: Things that I want to do" ranges from the entirely reasonable ("Go up down-escalators and go down up-escalators"), via the barely achievable ("Ride in an airship"), to the impossible ("Go up in a spaceship and see Earth from space"). I don't want to give away the plot, but I have to say that all these wishes are granted, one way or another.

Killing children is something that writers indulge in from time to time. It's a high-risk business. If the crime is aggravated by mawkishness, the penalties can be severe. Passing sentence on Dickens, Oscar Wilde famously asserted that "One must have a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell without laughing." In seeking to evade the charge of sentimentality, other writers have been sententious, offering pseudospiritual comforts, such as death being part of "a cycle" of some sort. (It is almost a rule, these days, that in children's literature death has to be presented as life-affirming, or even life-enhancing.) Beyond all this, of course, is the reasonable suspicion that killing children is the easiest way for writers to squeeze their readers' tear ducts. A surprising number of us think that a good cry is an essential part of a good read.

Knowing all this, as she obviously does, Sally Nicholls has been either courageous or reckless to write, as her first novel, the story of a boy who dies of leukaemia. And she would seem to have made matters even more difficult for herself by writing in the first person, which means, among other things, that her narrator cannot be around to write the last scene. Does she get away with it? Yes, she does. She knows what the traps are, steps into them, and steps out again unscathed.
In all first-person narratives the voice is, obviously, everything. Sam's is the voice of an unexceptional boy transformed by the enormity of what awaits him, and getting it to ring true is a hugely impressive achievement. I should mention (through gritted teeth) that Nicholls was only 23 when she wrote Ways to Live Forever. Her publishers have very high hopes for her, and on the strength of her debut they seem entirely justified. This is an elegant, intelligent, moving and sometimes even funny book. Young readers (and brave parents, and teachers) will love it.

Next has plenty of ideas and discussions on the moral and financial implications of human genetic engineering, but none of them add up to a cohesive and involving story. The chapters are short and crisp, some moments even thrilling, but it’s hard to care where the story is going when there are so many thinly thought-out plots and characters.

With a more straightforward and focused approach, Crichton could have created a sharp literary science fiction thriller. One of the most intriguing ideas in Next involves the dilemma of humans stubbornly declaring their right to free will while desiring to blame their mistakes on genes (which ironically disregards free will if we merely act a certain way simple because it’s in our genetic makeup). This idea could have then been shaped around the story involving Alex and her son fleeing cross-country because a court system has ordered that a biotech firm has a right to their genes (regardless of Alex’s choice) so they can manufacture a potentially million dollar cure for cancer.

With his previous works and a few tidbits in Next, Crichton has proven he has the ability to write compelling science fiction with intelligent hypotheses and authentically human characters. Next is just proof he wasn’t born with those genes – he still has to choose to write that way.

woogh. i'm so tired :x just get back after swimming with my grandma and lil' brother. feels soooo different when i swim with my buddies ; today is "real" swim lol. btw, today i read --again-- miiko comics !! aaa i lovee it~ since i was young ; i always love miiko!always makes us laugh out loud, eh? ;p

for you who doesn't know about hi, miiko! --poor you!-- *the real title is Kocchimuite Miiko*; here's the story :

YAMADA Miiko, our main character, is a 5th-grader.

Her best friends are SHIMURA Mari and OGAWA Yuuko (Yukko). Yukko’s boyfriend is SATOU Kenta.

SATOU is friends with EGUCHI Tappei, a boy who called Miiko, shortie.

YOSHIDA Ikuya is another boy that likes Miiko. lol

Miiko has a brother named Mamoru. Her mother works as a manga editor for Ocia (this is a pun from Ciao, the magazine where KM is being serialized) and her father is a salaryman. Since both parents work, Miiko and Mamoru share responsibilities with their house chores. But usually, Mamoru will take the responsibility to do more chores since Miiko is the typical laid back older sister. Despite that, throughout the book, you will see that Miiko loves her family so much.
Miiko’s story life revolves around the school and their two-bedroom house. At school, she is the constant target of being verbally-bullied by Tappei. It is funny to read and laugh at how Miiko and Tappei’s relationship is going. Obviously they enjoy each other’s company (though undeclared like Yukko-and-Kenta’s), but like any other school grader (and perhaps adults who read this, too) they had fights and quarrel very often. *smile* Meanwhile at home, their bedroom is the subject of a constant debate between Mamoru and Miiko. Both share the same room, however, Miiko doesn't share her roommate's frustration over being clean or tidy. XDDD
Meanwhile, as the story developes further, Tappei is easily annoyed and insecure whenever Miiko hangs out with YOSHIDA. He often interrupts the time that Miiko is alone with YOSHIDA and ends up making Miiko angry for being a pest. Some people suggest to Miiko that Tappei is rude to her, but she would deny it.
True, from our point of view, what Tappei is doing to Miiko can be considered rude, but he also—like Miiko said—has his own good attributes. Once he takes the responsibility and apologizes to their homeroom teacher when a vase was broken. It was actually Miiko who shattered it. And when Miiko forget her underwear and her house keys at the same time, it was Tappei who saved her from further embarrassment.
This manga also talks about friendship and family. Miiko and Mari have many differences, but Yukko is always there to make them think clearly. That doesn’t mean they are really dependant on Yukko, there’s always time when Yukko is confused and can not make up any decision and her two best friends help her. Uniquely enough, the stories portrayed show awareness about these issues: pet, people with bad intentions to children, the joy of giving, respect, and countless messages. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys the values of life and friends, young or old.
The original series was titled ‘Miiko Desu’ (MD) and was in another magazine called Pyong-pyong (Boink-boink), which has been discontinued. At MD, Miiko is a 4th grader, and YOSHIDA doesn’t show up that often. MD is published in Indonesia with the title ‘Namaku Miiko’ (My name is Miiko!) currently at volume 4. Meanwhile KM is titled, ‘Hai Miiko!’ (Hi, Miiko!). There are also some spin-off titles like ‘Best of Miiko’ (latest here is vol. 3) and ‘Miiko in Edo Period’. All are great collections. And as a plus: this manga won the Shogakukan Award in 1996 in Children's category. The drawing maybe cute and simple, but the story runs deep into our heart.

*sigh* well, whenever i read miiko. i always remember this boy. his name? secret! lol. i already found my own Tappei ; he's just like Tappei for me. We fight oftenly and he also shy to confess his feelings *in the end, HE DID IT!* clapclapclap lol. but i'm not Miiko :p People thought we're a couple. LMAO. and some people told me i'm STUPID that i "refuse his request" . but trust me ; we can't be couple. being friend is the best choice for us at that time. i still remember ; one night he called me while i'm reading Miiko. then i laughed out loud *as usual* when read it, then he asked me why ; i told him "I AM READING". then he answered : "MIIKO?" haha. he knows me better than others :) i told him : you're such looks like Tappei ! even your face and the way you talks ; hey stupid Tappei !! lol then he answered : okay then, it's okay i'm Tappei, but you have to be Miiko? *spechless* Hello, stupid Tappei! How are you? I bet you're okay right now. Because --just like you said to me-- Tappei never cry, right? lol-- If someday you read this post ; then you'll know that i don't regret my decision! well.. i have to say that this is my 3th blog. i've made 2 blogs before ; but i forgot the password. i'm such a short-minded person T^T anyway, let's put the past behind and start something new lol.

it's already 3.13 am here. and i still stuck on youtube ; looking for ss501's videos. fyi, i'm their BIG FANS! esp. hyun joong and young saeng. and after watched happy together this afternoon, i also like kyu jong lol. they're all such a talented person ;)

last night i dreamed of yesung --member of super junior-- and when i wake up ; i feel like he's my future husband! lol well this might sounds crazy ; but.. that's me! really, sometimes i also feel so silly! oh damn ; why did you have to be that cute and why did you have killer-smile, oppa?!
